How Do You Celebrate…
How do you celebrate
When social limitations
Prevent usual festivities?
An airplane passes unseen
Leaving only the roar of its presence;
An earthquake slightly shakes
Your bed before you sleep.
A butterfly flirts with a partner,
Flitting and flying about
In the warm sunlight.
A pink rose starts to sag
After having bloomed
Several weeks,
So its Rosey friends join her.
An anniversary comes,
Six years after a spouse
Left for heavenly heights;
Family gather round
A granite headstone
Remembering moments
And looking towards the next.
A girl turns 13:
Friends drive by honking,
Waving colorful posters,
Cheering from open windows;
A girl is honored beyond belief,
More special than
A non-pandemic party event.
The sun now sets faithfully
On another day,
Birds settle into their nests;
And yet,
A state of emergency still warns:
Pandemic (a.k.a. COVID-19)
Not going away.
Children refuse to settle down;
Ice cream treats become the new norm
As parents give in to
Persuasive pleas from
Tiny, persistent humans.
Wearing a mask in public
Becomes the heated topic;
Social media posts
Advocating both sides;
All the while positive tests
Rise to unimaginable numbers,
Like the single ant
Bringing a small, treasured corn kernel
Proudly to the colony,
Only to find her hundred siblings
Brought a field of blessings
To shower upon their queen.
An evening thunderstorm
Brings a silent hush
Until a setting sun
Restores regular routines.
During a pandemic,
What is a routine,
Except to stay six feet apart,
Hide your face with a cloth,
And wash constantly?
How do you find happiness,
When all around you
Fear and denial
Mingle like the witches’ brew
Casting unruliness amidst
Exhaustion?
The evening falls,
Birds whisper good night,
And children say their prayers,
All to wake tomorrow
Finding more dejection.
Where is the whisper of hope
We all need?
FInd that hope in the
16-year-old girl who stopped to
Help a woman with
Breaking groceries bags;
In the two men who rushed into
A burning house to save lives,
Not considering color or political persuasion,
Just helping those in need.
Angels live amongst us to
Remind about hope.
No matter the disarray found on the nightly news,
Hope lives on;
Love exists
Unceasingly.
Sit and be still,
Ignore the world,
And find wisdom from
A heavenly confidant who keeps
Your best interests at heart,
Unceasingly.
