Picked up a random poetry book From the crowded shelf. Quick easy hour read: Delight and wonder. Then, Found…
Ready five minutes early…
Ready five minutes early
What do you do?
Five minutes seems such a gift,
A present you give yourself
When last night you thoughtfully prepared
Lunch for the next day.
Five minutes,
300 seconds,
All to yourself.
The house is silent
Save for the hum of the fridge,
Ticking of the clock,
Rain hitting the windows,
Ice falling,
Five minutes has so many sounds.
Of course,
You could put away the clean dishes,
Wash your coffee mug from yesterday,
Sweep the kitchen floor.
Or,
What if you did not do anything for five minutes?
Just sat and let yourself be.
Listen to the sounds around you.
There is no television to distract you,
No social media posts to scroll through mindlessly,
No worthless points to try to win a game.
Just be.
Five minutes will teach you a lot about yourself.
Is it unbearable to sit still and listen?
Are there worries about the day ahead swimming
Inside your mind like a tadpole trying to swim?
What can happen in five minutes
Seems so trivial most of the time.
Five minutes pass so quickly usually,
Like the birthday party you’d planned for weeks,
Only to find it over in the blink of an eye.
Five minutes is a lifetime of waiting
If you are five I mean.
For this 40-year-old,
Five minutes is over and past
Five minutes turned into six,
Seven,
Then lateness.
Five minutes,
No matter what,
Offers hope,
Joy,
Contentment.
Sometimes,
That’s all we all need.

So true. I often turn off tv, music, to just sit and pray
Lynne, there’s nothing like having this quiet time! I find it totally reshapes my day. Glad you agree!
